Kyra Rowlingson

(She / Her)

‘i’ve always had a devotion to your cause. admiration to your wholehearted self. say anything, and i would follow, blindly believe you with unbroken certainty. call it intense adoration or perhaps stupidity. in some innate way i trust you.’ 2024

mixed media painting stretched on coloured paper.

This work is a large, scaled exploration of autobiographical memory, experimentally created by the innate application of paint to material. The maroon paper stretched and ripped around the frame set out to scribe the emotional qualities of this specific memory in a delicate, precise way.

Kyra Rowlingson is a painter whose practice is centred within the transformation of moments from her autobiographical memory into physical forms. Her application of paint to surface is intuitive and bodily, the layering of these materials is informed by the memory she is engrossed in at that moment. Colours, emotional feelings and textures are reinvented in oil pastel forms, ink pen scratches or splatters of dull house paint. The non-representational forms are a playful exploration of abstraction that celebrate the emotional stimulant rather than the figurative; with which they are a balance of methodical, innate, and sporadic mark making. Each piece is created with the understanding that the viewer isn’t supposed to recognise the intricacies of the memory but are instead invited to bring their own interpretation to the colour and movement showcased in each piece.
